Know More: How the Salary to Hourly Calculator Works
Updated for 2026. Pay conversions use your own hours and weeks. The after-tax figures use the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction ($16,100 single), the $184,500 Social Security wage base and each state's 2026 income tax and payroll programs, the same rules as our paycheck calculators.

How to convert salary to hourly
Divide your annual salary by the number of hours you are paid for in a year. A full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so:
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ 2,080
For example, $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. If you work 37.5 hours a week, use 1,950 hours instead ($30.77 an hour). Monthly pay works the same way: multiply by 12 for the year, then divide by your yearly hours. A $5,000 monthly salary is $60,000 a year, or $28.85 an hour at 40 hours a week.
How to convert hourly to annual
Multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week and by the weeks you are paid:
Annual pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
For example, $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 a year, or $4,333 a month and $1,000 a week. A quick shortcut for full-time work: double the hourly rate and add three zeros ($25 an hour is about $50,000), which is a little under the real figure because a year has 2,080 hours, not 2,000.
Adjusting for unpaid time off and part-time hours
If you are hourly and take unpaid weeks off, lower "Paid Weeks per Year": $25 an hour for 50 paid weeks is $50,000, not $52,000. For part-time work, enter your real weekly hours: $20 an hour at 25 hours a week is $26,000 a year.
Salaried workers are paid for holidays and vacation, so their yearly pay does not change, but they work fewer hours for it. Enter your paid holidays and vacation days and the calculator shows your rate per hour actually worked. With 10 holidays and 15 vacation days, a $60,000 salary is paid for 2,080 hours but worked for 1,880, which is $31.91 per hour actually worked instead of $28.85.

Salary vs hourly: which pays more?
The same yearly amount pays the same, but the two work differently:
- Overtime: most hourly workers must be paid 1.5 times their rate for hours over 40 a week. Many salaried workers are "exempt" and get no extra pay for long weeks. To be exempt under federal rules, a salaried employee must earn at least $684 a week ($35,568 a year) and do qualifying executive, administrative or professional work (U.S. Department of Labor); some states, such as California, New York and Washington, set a higher salary floor.
- Stability: a salary is paid even in slow weeks and usually includes paid holidays and vacation. Hourly pay rises and falls with your hours.
- Real hourly rate: a salaried job with 50-hour weeks pays less per hour than it looks. $60,000 for 50 hours a week is $23.08 an hour, not $28.85.
To compare an hourly offer with a salaried one, convert both to the same period here, then compare benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid time off.
Your hourly rate after taxes
Turn on after-tax to see what you keep. For a single filer on $60,000 a year ($28.85 an hour before tax) in 2026, the hourly rate after federal and state taxes, Social Security and Medicare is about:
| State | Take-home per year | After-tax hourly rate |
|---|---|---|
| Texas (no income tax) | $50,390 | $24.23 |
| California | $48,037 | $23.09 |
| Pennsylvania | $47,854 | $23.01 |
| Illinois | $47,565 | $22.87 |
| New York | $47,456 | $22.82 |
These assume no 401(k), health premiums or other deductions. For a full paycheck with deductions, use the Salary & Paycheck Calculator or the Hourly Paycheck Calculator.
Methodology and last updated
The calculator turns the amount you enter into a yearly figure (hourly × hours × paid weeks, daily × days × paid weeks, weekly × paid weeks, biweekly × 26, semi-monthly × 24, monthly × 12), then divides it back into every period. Weekly, daily and hourly figures use your paid weeks; biweekly, semi-monthly and monthly figures spread the year over 26, 24 and 12 paychecks. After-tax figures use the 2025 and 2026 federal rules (Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the same state rules as our state paycheck calculators, for a single job with no deductions. Results are estimates, not tax advice.

Salary to Hourly Calculator FAQs
How many working hours are in a year?
A full-time year is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. That count includes paid holidays and vacation. If you take 10 holidays and 15 vacation days off, you actually work about 1,880 hours.
$60,000 a year is how much an hour?
$60,000 a year is $28.85 an hour for a full-time, 40-hour week ($60,000 divided by 2,080 hours). That is $5,000 a month and $1,153.85 a week before tax, or about $24.23 an hour after tax in a state with no income tax.
$25 an hour is how much a year?
$25 an hour is $52,000 a year for a full-time, 40-hour week ($25 times 2,080 hours). That is $4,333 a month and $1,000 a week before tax. With 50 paid weeks instead of 52, it is $50,000.
Should I count paid holidays?
Yes, if they are paid. The standard 2,080-hour year already includes paid holidays and vacation. To see your rate per hour you actually work, enter your paid days off and the calculator adjusts it; for unpaid time off, lower the paid weeks instead.
Is it better to be salaried or hourly?
It depends on your hours. Hourly workers usually earn overtime at 1.5 times their rate after 40 hours, while many salaried workers do not. A salary is steadier and usually includes paid time off. Compare both at the same yearly hours and benefits.
