Important Disclaimer: Estimates of your full-year tax using IRS 2025 & 2026 brackets and standard deductions (including the 2025 tax law changes), the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500 and Medicare rates. Texas has no state income tax, no state disability insurance and no local income tax on wages. Actual paycheck withholding can differ based on your W-4, flat-rate withholding on bonuses and other income. For Married Filing Jointly, enter combined household wages; Social Security is applied to the combined total, so it may be slightly overstated if both spouses earn near the wage base. For exact tax planning, consult a qualified tax professional.

How Texas Paycheck Taxes Work: 2026 Guide

Updated for 2026. Texas has no state income tax, no state disability insurance and no local income tax on wages. Your paycheck pays federal income tax (standard deduction $16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly), Social Security on the first $184,500 of wages, and Medicare. Every figure on this page comes from the IRS, SSA or a Texas state agency.

How your Texas paycheck is calculated

A Texas paycheck has fewer steps than in most states because there is no state tax to withhold. Your employer starts with your gross pay, removes pre-tax benefits, withholds federal taxes, takes any after-tax deductions and pays you the rest.

  1. Gross paySalary, or hours × rate, plus overtime, bonuses and tips
  2. Pre-tax deductions401(k), health premiums, HSA, FSA, commuter benefits
  3. Federal taxesFederal income tax, Social Security and Medicare
  4. After-tax deductionsRoth 401(k), union dues, garnishments
  5. Net payThe take-home amount paid to you

Texas unemployment tax is paid by employers only. It is never deducted from your wages (Texas Workforce Commission).

Why Texas has no state income tax

Texas has never had a personal income tax, and in 2019 voters approved Proposition 4, which added a ban on an individual income tax to the Texas Constitution (Legislative Reference Library of Texas). The state relies on sales and property taxes instead. The state sales tax is 6.25%, and cities, counties and districts can add up to 2%, for a maximum combined rate of 8.25% (Texas Comptroller). So your paycheck is larger than in most states, but you pay more tax when you spend and on property you own.

Federal income tax brackets for 2026

Federal income tax is the only income tax on a Texas paycheck. These are the 2026 brackets set by the IRS:

RateSingleMarried filing jointlyHead of household
10%$0 to $12,400$0 to $24,800$0 to $17,700
12%$12,400 to $50,400$24,800 to $100,800$17,700 to $67,450
22%$50,400 to $105,700$100,800 to $211,400$67,450 to $105,700
24%$105,700 to $201,775$211,400 to $403,550$105,700 to $201,750
32%$201,775 to $256,225$403,550 to $512,450$201,750 to $256,200
35%$256,225 to $640,600$512,450 to $768,700$256,200 to $640,600
37%Over $640,600Over $768,700Over $640,600

The brackets apply to taxable income: your pay after pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction of $16,100 (single), $32,200 (married filing jointly) or $24,150 (head of household). A single filer earning $100,000 has $83,900 of taxable income and pays $13,170 in federal income tax, about 13.2% of gross pay. The Child Tax Credit of $2,200 per child under 17 lowers this further.

Social Security and Medicare on a Texas paycheck

  • Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026, a maximum of $11,439 a year (SSA). Once you pass the limit, it stops for the rest of the year.
  • Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, with no limit. Employers withhold an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 in a year.

Together these are 7.65% of most paychecks, and your employer pays the same amount again on your behalf.

Take-home pay examples in Texas for 2026

These results come from the calculator above for a single filer paid monthly, with no pre-tax deductions:

A married couple filing jointly on $150,000 of combined pay takes home about $123,185 a year (17.9% in total taxes). With two children under 17, a couple earning $100,000 takes home about $89,110, because the $4,400 Child Tax Credit cuts their federal tax to $3,240. An hourly worker on $15 an hour, 40 hours a week, earns $31,200 and takes home about $27,249; at $25 an hour it is $43,962 a year, or $3,664 a month.

For comparison, the same $100,000 salary takes home about $72,969 in California, which has a state income tax and SDI, or $6,211 less than in Texas. Compare with our California paycheck calculator.

How bonuses, overtime and tips are taxed in Texas

  • Bonuses: Employers usually withhold a flat 22% federal income tax on bonuses (37% on bonus pay over $1 million in a year), plus Social Security and Medicare. There is no state tax on a Texas bonus. On a $100,000 salary you keep about $7,035 of a $10,000 bonus. See the bonus tax calculator.
  • Overtime: Texas follows the federal rule: 1.5 times your regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. There is no daily overtime and no double time under Texas law. See the overtime calculator.
  • Tips and the new federal deductions: For 2025 to 2028, qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, or $25,000 for joint filers) can be deducted from federal taxable income. With no state income tax in Texas, this lowers the only income tax you pay. Social Security and Medicare still apply. Tipped employees can be paid a cash wage of $2.13 an hour when tips make up the rest of the minimum wage (U.S. Department of Labor).

Because Texas has no state income tax, an HSA is completely tax-free on a Texas paycheck. That is not true in every state; California, for example, taxes HSA contributions.

Salary or hourly pay in Texas

For hourly pay, multiply your rate by your weekly hours and by 52. A full-time year is 2,080 hours. Texas uses the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour (Texas Workforce Commission), which is $15,080 a year full time. Salaried employees exempt from overtime must generally earn at least $684 a week, or $35,568 a year, under federal law (U.S. Department of Labor).

Final paychecks in Texas

Under the Texas Payday Law, a worker who is fired or laid off must be paid in full within six calendar days. A worker who quits must be paid by the next regular payday (Texas Workforce Commission).

Why your actual paycheck may differ from this estimate

  • This calculator estimates your tax for the full year. Employers withhold federal tax using IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so each check can be a little higher or lower.
  • Bonuses are often withheld at a flat 22% instead of your real rate.
  • Social Security stops once your wages pass $184,500, so late-year paychecks of high earners are larger.
  • Some benefits are taken only from certain paychecks, and in some years biweekly pay has 27 pay dates instead of 26.

How to increase your take-home pay in Texas

  • Check your withholding with the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator and update your W-4 after a raise, a new job or a change in your family. Texas has no state withholding form.
  • Use pre-tax benefits such as a 401(k), FSA, commuter benefits and especially an HSA, which is fully tax-free in Texas.
  • If you earn tips or overtime, keep records so you can claim the federal tips and overtime deductions when you file.

How this calculator works

The calculator estimates your full-year federal tax and divides it by your pay periods. It uses the 2026 federal brackets, standard deduction and credits (Rev. Proc. 2025-32, including the 2025 tax law changes), the 2026 Social Security wage base and Medicare rates. Texas has no state or local income tax to add. For joint filers, enter combined household wages. Results are estimates, not tax advice.
