New York income tax brackets for 2026

New York taxes income in nine brackets from 3.9% to 10.9%. The 2026 rates on the first five brackets are 0.1 point lower than in 2025 (3.9% instead of 4%, up to 5.9% instead of 6%). The bracket amounts are not indexed for inflation. These are the 2026 rate schedules in Publication NYS-50-T-NYS from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

A single filer earning $100,000 has $92,000 of New York taxable income after the $8,000 standard deduction. The tax is $4,191 on the first $80,650 plus 5.9% of the rest, or $4,860.65, about 4.9% of gross pay.

The tax benefit recapture. Once your New York adjusted gross income passes $107,650, New York gradually takes back the benefit of its lower brackets. Over the next $50,000 of income, your tax moves toward a flat rate on all of your taxable income. A single filer earning $150,000 pays $8,291, about $480 more than the brackets alone would give. The calculator applies the recapture automatically, which is why your marginal rate can look higher than your bracket in that range.

New York standard deduction and exemptions for 2026

  • Standard deduction: $8,000 for single and married filing separately; $16,050 for married filing jointly and qualifying surviving spouse; $11,200 for head of household; $3,100 if someone can claim you as a dependent.
  • Dependent exemption: $1,000 for each dependent. New York has no personal exemption for you or your spouse.
  • Itemized deductions: You can itemize in New York even if you take the federal standard deduction, but state and local income taxes are not deductible.
  • Credits: The Empire State Child Credit, the household credit and the New York earned income credit are claimed on your return, so they do not change your paychecks or this estimate.

Federal taxes on every New York paycheck

Federal income tax depends on your income, filing status and the choices on your W-4. For 2026 the brackets run from 10% to 37%, and the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for joint filers and $24,150 for heads of household (IRS).

  • Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026, a maximum of $11,439 (SSA).
  • Medicare: 1.45% of all wages. Employers also withhold an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 in a year.

New York SDI and Paid Family Leave: what they are and how much you pay

New York has two small payroll contributions that fund benefits when you cannot work.

  • Disability benefits (SDI or DBL): These pay part of your wages if an off-the-job injury or illness keeps you from working. Your employer may take 0.5% of your wages, but no more than $0.60 a week, which is $31.20 a year (Workers' Compensation Board). Some employers pay it for you.
  • Paid Family Leave (PFL): This pays you while you bond with a new child, care for a seriously ill family member or help when a relative is called to military service. In 2026 you pay 0.432% of gross wages, up to $411.91 a year, and the maximum weekly benefit is $1,228.53 (NY Paid Family Leave).

On a $100,000 salary you pay $31.20 for disability and $411.91 for Paid Family Leave, $443.11 in total. PFL stops once your wages reach about $95,349, so higher earners pay the same maximum.

Local income taxes in New York: New York City and Yonkers

Only two places in New York tax wages. Choose where you live in the calculator and it adds the right tax.

  • New York City: Residents of the five boroughs pay New York City income tax of 3.078% to 3.876% on their New York taxable income. On a $100,000 salary that is $3,441 a year, which cuts take-home pay to about $70,435. People who work in the city but live elsewhere do not pay it. See the NYC paycheck calculator for city residents and commuters.
  • Yonkers residents: pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their New York State tax. On a $100,000 salary that is $814 a year.
  • Yonkers nonresidents: who work in Yonkers pay an earnings tax of 0.5% of the wages they earn there.

No other New York city or county taxes your wages. Local sales and property taxes are separate and do not come out of your paycheck.

How bonuses, overtime and tips are taxed in New York

  • Bonuses: Employers usually withhold a flat 22% federal tax and a flat 11.70% New York State tax on bonuses, plus 4.25% for New York City residents (NYS-50-T-NYS and NYS-50-T-NYC). Social Security, Medicare and Paid Family Leave also apply. Your real tax is settled when you file. On a $100,000 salary the actual tax on a $10,000 bonus is about $3,582, so you keep about $6,418. See the bonus tax calculator.
  • Overtime: New York pays 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a week. There is no daily overtime rule. Overtime is taxed as ordinary wages. See the overtime calculator.
  • Tips and the new federal deductions: The federal deductions for qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, or $25,000 for joint filers) cover 2025 to 2028. From 2026 New York also lets you subtract up to $25,000 of qualified tips, following the federal rules (FY2027 budget summary). New York has no overtime deduction, so overtime is fully taxed by the state. Social Security, Medicare and PFL still apply to both.

How pre-tax deductions change your New York take-home pay

New York starts from your federal adjusted gross income, so pre-tax benefits lower state tax the same way they lower federal tax:

Salary or hourly pay in New York

For hourly pay, multiply your rate by your weekly hours and by 52. A full-time year is 2,080 hours. From January 1, 2026 the minimum wage is $17.00 an hour in New York City, Long Island and Westchester ($35,360 a year full time) and $16.00 an hour in the rest of the state ($33,280) (NY Department of Labor). A full-time worker on $17.00 an hour takes home about $29,095 a year outside New York City.

Salaried employees classed as exempt from overtime must earn at least $1,275 a week ($66,300 a year) in New York City, Long Island and Westchester, and $1,199.10 a week ($62,353.20 a year) in the rest of the state in 2026. Manual workers must generally be paid weekly.

Why your actual paycheck may differ from this estimate

  • This calculator estimates your tax for the full year. Employers withhold using the IRS and New York withholding tables and your W-4 and IT-2104, so each check can be a little higher or lower.
  • Withholding tables do not fully reflect the tax benefit recapture, so earners above $107,650 can owe a little more when they file.
  • Bonuses are often withheld at flat rates (22% federal, 11.70% New York) instead of your real rate.
  • Social Security stops once your wages pass $184,500, and Paid Family Leave stops at its yearly maximum, so late-year paychecks of high earners are larger.
  • Credits such as the Empire State Child Credit and the earned income credit are claimed when you file, not through your paycheck.

How to increase your take-home pay in New York

  • Check your federal withholding with the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator and update your W-4 and IT-2104 after a raise, a new job or a change in your family.
  • Use pre-tax benefits such as a 401(k), HSA, FSA and commuter benefits. They lower both federal and New York tax.
  • If your income is just above $107,650, pre-tax contributions also reduce the tax benefit recapture, so each dollar saves more than your bracket rate.
  • Claim New York credits you qualify for when you file, such as the Empire State Child Credit and the New York earned income credit.

How this calculator works

The calculator estimates your full-year tax and divides it by your pay periods. It uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction (Rev. Proc. 2025-32, including the 2025 tax law changes), New York's 2026 rate schedules with the tax benefit recapture, standard deductions and dependent exemptions, the New York City and Yonkers resident taxes, the 2026 disability and Paid Family Leave contributions and the 2026 Social Security wage base. For joint filers, enter combined household wages. Results are estimates, not tax advice.
