Important Disclaimer: Estimates of your full-year tax liability using IRS 2025 & 2026 brackets (including One Big Beautiful Bill Act changes) and the Virginia income tax brackets (2% to 5.75%) on federal adjusted gross income less the Virginia standard deduction ($8,750 single, $17,500 joint for 2025 and 2026) or Virginia itemized deductions, $930 personal and dependent exemptions and the $800 age 65 exemption. Virginia does not allow the federal tips and overtime deductions. Credits such as the Virginia low-income credit and earned income credit are claimed on your return and are not included. Actual paycheck withholding can differ based on your W-4/VA-4 elections and other income. For Married Filing Jointly, enter combined household wages; Social Security is applied to the combined total, so it may be slightly overstated if both spouses earn near the wage base. For exact tax planning, consult a qualified tax professional.

How your Virginia paycheck is calculated

Virginia has one state income tax and no local income tax or state payroll programs. Your employer starts with your gross pay, removes pre-tax benefits, withholds federal and Virginia taxes, takes after-tax deductions and pays you the rest.

Virginia income tax brackets for 2026

Virginia uses the same four brackets for every filing status, and they have not changed since 1990. Because the top rate starts at only $17,000 of taxable income, most full-time workers pay 5.75% on most of their income.

Virginia standard deduction and exemptions for 2026

  • Standard deduction: $8,750 for single filers, heads of household and married filing separately; $17,500 for married couples filing jointly. Virginia Tax confirms these amounts stay the same for 2026 and change again for 2027 (Virginia Tax).
  • Personal exemption: $930 for you, your spouse and each dependent.
  • Age 65 or older, or blind: an extra $800 exemption each.
  • Itemized deductions: you can itemize in Virginia only if you itemize on your federal return, and state income taxes are not deductible.

Virginia starts from your federal adjusted gross income, so 401(k) contributions, health premiums, HSA and FSA contributions lower your Virginia tax too. A single filer earning $100,000 has $90,320 of Virginia taxable income after the $8,750 standard deduction and $930 exemption. The tax is $720 plus 5.75% of $73,320, or $4,936, about 4.9% of gross pay.

Federal taxes on every Virginia paycheck

Federal income tax depends on your income, filing status and the choices on your W-4. For 2026 the brackets run from 10% to 37%, and the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for joint filers and $24,150 for heads of household (IRS).

  • Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026, a maximum of $11,439 (SSA).
  • Medicare: 1.45% of all wages. Employers also withhold an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 in a year.

Paychecks in Virginia Beach, Richmond and Arlington

No Virginia city or county taxes wages, so the same salary gives the same take-home pay in Virginia Beach, Richmond, Arlington, Fairfax and anywhere else in the state. What differs is pay levels and living costs, especially housing in Northern Virginia, and local sales and property taxes.

Working across the state line

Many people in Northern Virginia commute to Washington DC or Maryland. If you live in Virginia, you pay Virginia income tax on all your wages; DC does not tax nonresidents, and Maryland residents who commute daily into Virginia pay their home state's tax instead. Virginia has reciprocal arrangements for daily commuters from Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, who give their employer Form VA-4 to stop Virginia withholding.

How bonuses, overtime and tips are taxed in Virginia

  • Bonuses: Employers usually withhold a flat 22% federal tax and 5.75% Virginia tax on bonuses, plus Social Security and Medicare. Your real tax is settled when you file. On a $100,000 salary you keep about $6,460 of a $10,000 bonus. See the bonus tax calculator.
  • Overtime: Virginia pays 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Overtime is taxed as ordinary wages. See the overtime calculator.
  • Tips and the new federal deductions: The federal deductions for qualified tips (up to $25,000) and the overtime premium (up to $12,500, or $25,000 for joint filers) cover 2025 to 2028. Virginia starts from federal adjusted gross income, which comes before these deductions, so they do not lower Virginia tax.

Salary or hourly pay in Virginia

For hourly pay, multiply your rate by your weekly hours and by 52. A full-time year is 2,080 hours. The Virginia minimum wage is $12.77 an hour from January 1, 2026 (Virginia Department of Labor and Industry), which is $26,562 a year full time. A single full-time worker on $12.77 an hour takes home about $22,769 a year. Salaried employees exempt from overtime must generally earn at least $684 a week under federal law.

Why your actual paycheck may differ from this estimate

  • This calculator estimates your tax for the full year. Employers withhold using the IRS and Virginia withholding tables and your W-4 and VA-4, so each check can be a little higher or lower.
  • Credits such as the Virginia low-income credit and the Virginia earned income credit are claimed when you file, not through your paycheck.
  • Social Security stops once your wages pass $184,500, so late-year paychecks of high earners are larger.

How to increase your take-home pay in Virginia

  • Check your federal withholding with the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator and update your W-4 and VA-4 after a raise, a new job or a change in your family.
  • Use pre-tax benefits such as a 401(k), HSA, FSA and commuter benefits. Each dollar saves federal tax and up to 5.75% Virginia tax.
  • Contributions to a Virginia529 college savings account can be deducted from Virginia income up to state limits.

How this calculator works

The calculator estimates your full-year tax and divides it by your pay periods. It uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction (Rev. Proc. 2025-32, including the 2025 tax law changes), the Virginia brackets on federal adjusted gross income less the 2026 Virginia standard or itemized deduction and exemptions, and the 2026 Social Security wage base. For joint filers, enter combined household wages. Results are estimates, not tax advice.
